In September 2011, Barney Kulok was granted special permission to create photographs at the construction site of Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park, which are are featured in his new book Building: Louis I. Kahn at Roosevelt Island (Aperture, 2012). Four Freedoms Park was commissioned in 1973 and designed by Louis I. Kahn. The last design completed by Kahn before his untimely death in 1974, the park became widely regarded as one of the great unbuilt masterpieces of twentieth-century architecture. Over forty years after it was commissioned, the park is finally being completed this year as originally intended.
Join photographer Barney Kulok and Gina Pollara, Executive Director of Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park, for a special guided preview of the park before its official opening day in October.
Directions to the site will be sent to all guests, and a release form is required for site entry prior to the park’s official opening.
