Funded by a Kickstarter campaign, Singular Beauty is a very satisfying finished object. The book is presented inside a clean white box and features pages clipped together like a sheaf of cosmetic-surgery brochures. It’s the perfect package for a voyeuristic journey into the spaces where our culture’s obsessive striving for physical perfection is made real. Phillips explores the world of cosmetic surgery with real inventiveness, documenting the pristine environments and menacing implements used to transform our bodies into imagined ideals. The suitably clinical presentation of the work offers an inventive approach to a familiar subject and a poignant critique of the narcissism that pervades our culture.

Cara Phillips was born and raised in suburban Detroit. She is the cofounder of the online exhibition site Women in Photography and a member of the international photography group Piece of Cake. She has received numerous awards and her work is in several private collections. She lives and works in Brooklyn.
