    Aperture is pleased to present a new limited-edition photograph by Samuel Gratacap, whose work was featured in Aperture issue 222, “Odyssey.” This image is part of Gratacap’s series Empire (2012–14). For nine years, the thirty-two-year-old French photographer has followed the lives of refugees and migrants crossing the Mediterranean, documenting moments of departure—and the emotions of waiting—at sites including the Italian island of Lampedusa and a detention center in Marseille, France. At its peak of operation, the transit camp at Choucha, Tunisia, where Empire is set, received upward of two hundred thousand migrants, many fleeing the crisis in neighboring Libya and others escaping conflicts in West Africa and Southeast Asia. As Bronwyn Law-Viljoen writes in Aperture: “Empire is part of Gratacap’s long investigation into the Mediterranean migration crisis. Begun in 2007, it encompasses interviews, community involvement, filmmaking, the collection of ephemera, and, finally, photography. This immersion is reflected in the photographs: they suggest at once a respectful distance and a desire for a slender connection, achieved through acute observation of gestures.” Gratacap’s intimate, personal scenes from North Africa reveal how individuals occupy their time while awaiting passage to Europe. Here, in this photograph, in an uncertain transit zone where people seek a new identity, one man finds only a partial reflection of a life lived elsewhere. “My work,” Gratacap says, “is about these territories of movement: the border crossings, the waiting zones for daily workers, the prison, as well as the places related to the ‘rest’ of the body, the paths toward a newfound identity. How does it feel when one person is, at the same time, not feeling at home and not being accepted as a foreigner? How does the body ‘store’ both the rootlessness and the rejection?” Samuel Gratacap (b. 1982, lives between Paris and Tunis) has exhibited his work in several group and solo shows, including a solo exhibition of Empire at LE BAL, Paris, in 2015.     Aperture is pleased to present a very special limited-edition Mickalene Thomas boxset, comprised of the photograph Le déjeuner sur l’herbe: les trois femmes noires and a specially bound signed copy of MUSE. In “Le déjeuner sur l’herbe: les trois femmes noires” (2010), Thomas transforms Edouard Manet’s notorious canvas (1862-3) into a collaged photograph, as well as a large-scale rhinestone-encrusted mural. Thomas has replaced Manet’s scandalizing dressed men and naked women with three black women who gaze directly at the viewer, dressed to the nines in sundresses, hoop earrings, and full make-up. Of the photograph, Thomas said, “When I was looking through the lens and trying to compose the image I wanted to have the depth of field that Manet has with the woman in the background, and it created that same environment with the Matisse sculpture taking the place of the fourth figure. Everything fell into place. Everything felt right. I didn’t have to try reconstructing things or forcing things. I saw it and I responded and it worked.” Learn More

    Aperture is pleased to present a very special limited-edition Mickalene Thomas boxset, comprised of the photograph A moment's pleasure in black and white, 2006/8 and a specially bound signed copy of MUSE. Mickalene Thomas, known for her large-scale, multi-textured, and rhinestone-encrusted paintings of domestic interiors and portraits, has also identified the photographic image as a defining touchstone for her practice. Thomas first began to photograph herself and her mother as a student at Yale—a pivotal experience for her as an artist. While working across multiple series, much of her photographic work functions as a personal act of deconstruction and reappropriation—both of images she has created herself and images she has singled out as influence. With each series, she grapples with and asserts new definitions of beauty and inspiration. Thomas’s portraits draw equally from 1970s black-is-beautiful images of women such as supermodel Beverly Johnson and actress Vonetta McGee; Édouard Manet’s odalisque figures; and the mise-en-scène studio portraiture of James Van Der Zee and Malick Sidibé, to mention a few. Perhaps of greatest importance, however, this collection of portraits and staged scenes reflects a very personal community of inspiration as well—a collection of muses that includes herself, her mother, and her friends and lovers, emphasizing the communal and social aspects of art-making and creativity that pervade her work. This volume is the first to gather together her various approaches to photography, including portraits, collages, Polaroids, and other processes, and will be the foundation for a major traveling exhibition of the work to launch in 2015.     In anticipation of the upcoming publication Short Stories: Photographs by Paolo Ventura, Aperture is pleased to release two new limited-editions in support of this publication and crafted by the artist in his studio in Italy. Each suite of pictures is presented in a specially design box produced by the artist. Paolo Ventura’s Short Stories are whimsical narratives told through pictures—tales of love, war, and family—where things magically appear or disappear, set in an imaginary past of World War II Italy. Much like in silent films, the drama unfolds with no words
or captions. For these works and those to be featured in the publication, Ventura constructed life-sized sets, in which he situated himself and members of his family (casting his son, wife and twin brother as actors), in stories that are at once charming and disquieting. While seemingly simple, Ventura’s vignettes come with larger implications: brothers who encounter each other by surprise on the battlefield, jugglers who appear from above, a man who packs himself into his suitcase, a small-town magician who accidently makes his son disappear for real, and many others. Here, Ventura has built a world of realistic proportions and actors, in fantastical tales and against painted backdrops—challenging notions of what is real and what is make-believe. Featured here are special print editions of two of these tales, Man with Suitcase #2 and The Red Ballon. Each will be featured in the book, which collects the entire series of Ventura’s Short Stories together for the first time, including three previously unpublished, and offers a glimpse into the artist’s extraordinary imagination.
