Photographer Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao’s images of New York are distinctive – both personal, and hyperreal. With painstaking care and the use of multiple large-format film exposures, Liao “stitches” each image together with technical precision to create detail-driven panoramas of the urban landscape. With the publication of his latest monograph, New York, we visited Liao at his home studio in Queens to explore what’s behind Liao’s unique perspective of New York City.

Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao: New York is an oversized monograph that includes photographs taken over the last ten years. From rehabilitated Coney Island to the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, from the demise of Shea Stadium in Queens to the newly built One World Trade Center, Liao has created a lasting document of a significant period of transformation in New York’s skyline and social fabric.
