William Klein + Daido Moriyama – Exhibition and Book Signing
William Klein + Daido Moriyama is the first exhibition to look at the relationship between the work of influential photographer and filmmaker William Klein and that of Daido Moriyama, the most celebrated photographer to emerge from the Japanese Provoke movement of the 1960s.
With work from the 1950s to the present day, the exhibition demonstrates the visual affinity between their urgent, blurred, and grainy style of photography and also their shared desire to convey street life and political protest. The exhibition also considers the medium and dissemination of photography itself, exploring the central role of the photobook in avant-garde photography and the pioneering use of graphic design within these publications.
At the museum on Saturday, October 13, Daido Moriyama will be signing copies of his latest book Labyrinth (Aperture, 2012) from 10 am to 12 pm. The pages offer reproductions of original contact sheets; sequences of new contact sheets made from recombined negative strips, which juxtapose images from the 1950s with those from the past ten years; and selections of individual images, both familiar and newly discovered.
