Aperture Gallery Closing Reception
Thursday, January 16
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Aperture is moving! Join us for a closing reception to say goodbye to our space and celebrate Aperture. This will be a chance to see our three current exhibitions, The New Black Vanguard, Mark McKnight: 2019 Portfolio Prize Winner, and the 2019 PhotoBook Awards Shortlist, before they close.
After fifteen years in our Chelsea location, Aperture Gallery and Bookstore will close on January 18. Over the next year, Aperture will continue to operate from our Chelsea office as we prepare to open a new public space in Manhattan in 2021. We first moved to our current location in Chelsea in 2005. Since then, we have hosted over one hundred exhibitions—including the New York Times Magazine: Photographs, Mickalene Thomas: Muse, Prison Nation, Orlando curated by Tilda Swinton, The New Black Vanguard—and thousands of conversations and events with artists and thinkers like Daidō Moriyama, Stephen Shore, Susan Meiselas, and many more.
“For fifteen years, Aperture has been blessed to have this wonderful loft gallery in Chelsea. It’s been a space for bold artistic statements, new ideas, and for the photo community to connect,” Aperture Executive Director Chris Boot comments. “So many of you have enjoyed this space with us, and have learned things and grown as result of your experiences here. It’s truly sad for us to say goodbye to this space—but the end of one chapter is the beginning of another, and we look forward to unveiling our bold plans for Aperture’s future space soon.”
