Before it became part of New York City in 1898, Brooklyn was a city of its own—the fourth largest in the nation. Even today, as New York’s most populous borough, Brooklyn remains a “city within the city,” three times the size of Manhattan. It is from this point of inspiration that The City Within: Brooklyn Photographs presents more than thirty images by celebrated photographers Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb. Aperture published the book Brooklyn: The City Within in September 2019.
Alex Webb (born in San Francisco, 1952) has published more than fifteen books, including Memory City (2014, with Rebecca Norris Webb), La Calle: Photographs from Mexico (Aperture, 2016), and The Suffering of Light (Aperture, 2011). Webb became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1979. His work has been shown widely, and he has received numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007.
Rebecca Norris Webb (born in Rushville, Indiana, 1956), originally a poet, explores the complicated relationship between people and the natural world in her seven books, which include My Dakota (2012), Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba (2009, with Alex Webb), and The Glass Between Us (2006). A 2019 National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient, she has exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Cleveland Museum of Art; and elsewhere.
Sean Corcoran is curator of prints and photographs at the Museum of the City of New York. Corcoran has written extensively on photography, including essays for Elliott Erwitt: At Home and Around the World (Aperture, 2016) and I See a City: Todd Webb’s New York (2017).
