Shooting America: Tabitha Soren and Katy Grannan in Conversation

Join Aperture at Second Century: Photography, Feminism, Politics—a symposium presented by FotoFocus, for a conversation between Tabitha Soren (Fantasy Life, Aperture 2017) and Katy Grannan (Model American, Aperture 2005). Both will discuss their means and methods of representing American life, from the heroic efforts (and failures) of baseball stardom to the shambling lives of the dispossessed who struggle to conjure a glimmering dream, and just to get by.

This is the keynote conversation for the Second Century symposium, a one-day event comprising of panels featuring international and local participants exploring feminist approaches to photography and lens-based art at the intersection of current political concerns, with ranging from the January 21, 2017, Women’s March on Washington and subsequent political activism; Latin American films by female directors; and feminist engagement of photography both as conceptual art practice and widespread implication through social media practices.

Tabitha Soren left a successful career in television in 1999 to start another one as a photographer. Her work is included in public collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Oakland Museum of California; Transformer Station, Cleveland, Ohio; Pier 24 Photography, San Francisco; New Orleans Museum of Art; Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, Indiana; and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans. Her work has been featured in Dear Dave, McSweeney’s, Vanity Fair, New York Times Magazine, Blink, Slate, New York, Sports Illustrated, California Sunday Magazine, and ESPN The Magazine. She is represented by the Kopeikin Gallery, Los Angeles.

Katy Grannan was born in Arlington, Massachusetts, in 1969. She received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, in 1991 and her M.F.A. from Yale University in 1999. Her work has been featured in multiple group exhibitions; she was one of five photographers selected for the 2004 Whitney Biennial. Solo exhibitions of Grannan’s work have been held at Lawrence Rubin Greenberg Van Doren Fine Art in New York (2000 and 2003) and other galleries. She recently received the 2004 Baum Award for Emerging American Photographers, the Theater Gallery of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (2004). Grannan is represented by the Greenberg Van Doren Gallery, New York. She lives in New York City and San Francisco.
