In conjunction with the launch of the latest issue of Aperture magazine, “Future Gender,” Aperture is pleased to present a two-day symposium in partnership with the Art Gallery of Ontario featuring Chris Boot (Executive Director, Aperture) and Michael Famighetti (Editor, Aperture magazine) alongside a range of artists, writers, and scholars—including Awol Erizku, Sophie Hackett, Lyle Ashton Harris, Nelson Morales, Hank Willis Thomas, and more—working with photography and image culture to consider the potentials and limits of the medium as a vehicle for empathy, agency, and freedom, both individual and collective. What does urgency look like? For whom are photographs powerful? What collective action can images mobilize? What does sharing an image do? And, how might an image call forth a future?
