Words & Pictures

Tuesday, January 6

8:00 p.m. EDT

National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South, New York, NY

Join Aperture magazine and the Literature and Photography Committees of the National Arts Club for an evening exploring the relationship between photography and writing. As our increasingly image-driven culture arguably places new pressure on the written word, Aperture’s current “Lit.” issue explores how novels, poetry, and the short-story form have provided conceptual springboards for photographers, as well as how words function as images, how images can be “read,” and how documentary photographers have been influenced by literary history.

For this special evening, Aperture has invited three artists featured in the issue to speak about their work and literary influences. Moyra Davey, the “Lit.” issue’s cover artist whose work was also featured in the 2012 Whitney Biennial, will discuss her photographs and videos, which often reference both personal history and literary touchstones. Erica Baum will comment on her practice of reanimating fragments of found language through photography, and Gus Powell will present his latest series and forthcoming book based on William Steig’s classic The Lonely Ones. Aperture’s editor, Michael Famighetti, will also introduce the magazine issue. A brief Q&A will follow.

Collared shirts and jackets are required for gentlemen. Please refrain from using electronic devices in the Clubhouse.
