Josef Sudek Poet of Prague Outward Journey

A Photographer’s Life
Biographical Profile by Anna Farova

This and the following issue of Aperture appear in conjunction with a retrospective of Sudek’s photography at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from March 3 through May 6, 1990.

A contemporary of Paul Strand, Edward Weston, and Man Ray, as well as of Robert Frank and Lee Friedlander, Sudek through his images provides an ongoing series of revelations, demonstrating that he belongs among these photographers, in the forefront of twentieth-century photography.

“Outward Journey” examines the first half of Sudek’s extraordinary life, and introduces some of the lyrical photographic cycles—including the haunting, majestic studies of St. Vitus Cathedral—that earned him the title, “Poet of Prague.”
