Aperture’s gala provides vital support for our programming and publications, in pursuit of our mission to create insight, community, and understanding through photography. This year we will also celebrate our impending move to a new permanent home on the Upper West Side.

It will be an unforgettable evening, marking a pivotal moment in Aperture’s history. The gala will feature a live and silent auction. Please reserve your tickets by October 4, 2024.

Honorees

Nicole R. Fleetwood

Dr. Nicole R. Fleetwood is an art historian and the inaugural James Weldon Johnson Professor at New York University. A MacArthur Fellow, she is the author and curator of Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism, the John Hope Franklin Publication Prize of the American Studies Association, the Susanne M. Glasscock Humanities Book Prize for Interdisciplinary Scholarship, the Charles Rufus Morey Book Award in art history, and the Frank Jewett Mather Award in art criticism. Fleetwood cocurated and coedited Aperture’s Prison Nation, an exhibition and publication focusing on photography’s role in documenting mass incarceration. She is currently writing a nonfiction book titled Between the River and Railroad Tracks about growing up in the Black Midwest. She is on the board of MoMA PS1 and the Kitchen, NYC.

Richard Misrach 3

Richard Misrach is renowned for his trailblazing work in large-format color photography. He has been documenting the American landscape for over five decades through his influential and ongoing “Desert Cantos” project—an exploration of humanity’s complex relationship to place. Notable among his other series, all published by Aperture, are Border Cantos, a collaboration with composer Guillermo Galindo focused on the US–Mexico border; Golden Gate, a meticulous study of weather, time, color, and light; and Petrochemical America, chronicling the industrial corridor along the Mississippi River known as “Cancer Alley.” A recent addition, Richard Misrach on Landscape and Meaning was released as part of Aperture’s Photography Workshop Series.

Helen Nitkin Portrait

Helen Nitkin is an Aperture Trustee and cofounder of HB Nitkin, a real estate investment, development, and management company. In 2009 after the death of her husband Bradley, she assumed the position of CEO and chair. Nitkin is an amateur photographer and a collector who holds a master’s degree in urban planning from New York University. She is a member of Women Presidents Organization, the Yale School of Architecture Dean’s Council, and the Women’s Enterprise Action Loan Fund. As Chair of Aperture’s Real Estate Committee, she led the search for and acquisition of its new home at 380 Columbus Avenue; as a member of the Finance Committee she also has been instrumental in its financing.
