Aperture Loves New York: Stephen Shore and Lucy Gallun
Please join us at Aperture’s new home for a special conversation between photographer Stephen Shore and Lucy Gallun, Curator in the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. To mark the opening of our inaugural presentation Aperture Loves New York, which features an image from his landmark photobook Uncommon Places (Aperture, 1982 and 2015), the two will discuss Shore’s enduring legacy.
Aperture has a rich and vibrant history of publishing photographs made in New York and by New Yorkers. This dynamic selection of work by iconic Aperture artists is curated by executive director Sarah Meister, and features more than twenty important and memorable photographs from the 1950s to today. Alongside the rare and striking prints are the Aperture books in which these images were published. Aperture Loves New York offers visitors an opportunity to engage with highlights from the history of modern and contemporary photography both as original photographic prints and in the accessible, democratic form of beloved Aperture titles.

At age fourteen, Stephen Shore (born in New York, NY, 1947) had his work purchased by Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art, New York. At seventeen, Shore was a regular at Andy Warhol’s Factory, producing an important photographic document of the scene, and in 1971, at the age of twenty-three, he became the first living photographer since Alfred Stieglitz forty years earlier to have a solo show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has had numerous one-man shows, including those at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; George Eastman House, Rochester; Kunsthalle Düsseldorf; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Jeu de Paume, Paris; and Art Institute of Chicago. He has received two NEA grants and a Guggenheim Foundation grant. Since 1982, he has been director of the photography program at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, where he is the Susan Weber Professor in the Arts.
