A partnership born of a shared commitment to elevate artists’ voices.

Aperture and Documentary Arts have partnered to expand the awareness of and appreciation for select artists and their photographic practices. The first three titles in the series are Ming Smith: An Aperture Monograph (2020), the long-overdue first book of an artist whose poetic and experimental images are icons of twentieth-century African American life; Wendy Red Star: Delegation (2022), a comprehensive survey of an Apsáalooke artist whose photographs recast historical narratives with wit, candor, and a feminist, Indigenous perspective; and Kinship & Community: Selections from the Texas African American Photography Archive (2026), an inspiring example of collective self-representation from the final decades of official segregation in the United States, including a portfolio of new work by Rahim Fortune.

A forthcoming title, Picturing Black Girlhood, edited by Zoraida Lopez-Diago, Salamishah Tillet, and Scheherazade Tillet, is anticipated in mid-2027.
