Aperture Announces New Books for Fall 2026

Catherine Opie on Identity and Collectivity, The Photography Workshop Series

In this latest installment of Aperture’s best-selling Workshop series, Catherine Opie—best known for her sensitive portraits exploring identity and life on the margins of American society—invites five of her former star students to discuss a wide range of topics alongside her, from finding a distinct artistic voice, to the ethics of the camera, to the practicalities of making a photobook. In a series of engrossing conversations, Opie engages with Lucas Blalock, Janna Ireland, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Jeff Whetstone, and Carmen Winant, who offer insights into their individual and collective creative processes, while also paying tribute to Opie’s enduring influence as a mentor and trailblazer in contemporary photography. Elle Pérez: Devotions

Elle Pérez has emerged as a defining voice of their generation, making disarmingly intimate images that portray states of emotional intensity and physical transformation. Pérez started out as a teenager photographing underground spaces around New York, where they produced a tender and vivid record of unalloyed freedom. Since then, their work has ranged from striking portraits of friends and lovers to gladiatorial photographs of wrestlers, crystalline landscapes and still lifes, and sprawling multimedia collages that incorporate influences from across art and literature. Devotions presents Pérez’s most influential works from 2009 to the present, alongside reproductions of notes, laser prints, postcards, screenshots, reference articles, and research materials, which together show the artist’s working process and the idealism of the studio. Tina Barney: Fashion

Celebrated for her large-format tableaux of affluent families in the United States and Europe, Tina Barney is a keen observer of style and its coded web of meanings. Part memoir, part career survey, Tina Barney: Fashion traces the role of sartorial expression across Barney’s long career and considers Barney’s family history and photographic albums, focusing on her mother, a model in the 1930s, who graced the cover of Harper’s Bazaar and was photographed by Horst P. Horst, George Hoyningen-Huene, and other leading photographers of the era. Lively texts illuminate the intersections of fashion, photography, and family that have defined her life and shaped her practice. Publication date: October 2026.

Alex Webb: Walking Blues

In Walking Blues, the acclaimed street photographer Alex Webb—whose bestselling Aperture books include Dislocations and The Suffering of Light—traverses some forty cities across the United States, documenting moments of connection between communities with his signature eye for bold color and rhythm. Webb was inspired by the lift and pull of blues music, a quintessential American musical form that scores the nation’s culture, and his photographs express the improvisation of chance encounters. The culmination of more than a decade of intuitive, open-minded exploration, Webb’s latest book is a vivid chronicle of urban life today. Publication date: October 2026.

Josef Koudelka: Invasion Prague 68 (1st Hardcover Edition)

This first hardcover edition of the renowned Invasion 68, originally published in 2008, presents 250 searing images personally selected by Josef Koudelka from his archive that document the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia. Originally smuggled out of the country and circulated anonymously by Magnum Photos, the images quickly became recognized as defining records of the Prague Spring. This reissued classic pairs Koudelka’s photographs with press and propaganda quotes from the period, alongside texts by Czech historians, retaining the work’s power nearly sixty years later. Publication date: November 2026.
