Robert Frank: The Americans, Centennial Edition

In this latest edition of The Americans, Aperture commemorates the one-hundred-year anniversary of Robert Frank’s birth and his pioneering photobook which remains a photographic masterpiece for its encapsulation of American life postwar.

In celebration of the centennial of Robert Frank’s birth, Aperture is releasing this special slip-cased limited edition of the seminal photobook The Americans. This limited edition is encased in a cloth slipcase and includes a booklet featuring a survey of Robert Frank’s films, which was first published as an appendix in the Aperture and Museum of Modern Art 1968 edition of The Americans, now long out of print. Opened with a brief introduction by Frank, each film is accompanied by film stills.

Robert Frank (born in Zurich, 1924; died in Nova Scotia, Canada, 2019) was a Swiss American photographer and documentary filmmaker. He is best known for his seminal book The Americans, first published in 1958, which gave rise to a distinct new art form in the photobook. He is also known for his experimental film Pull My Daisy (1959). His other important projects include the books The Lines of My Hand (1972) and Black White and Things (1954), and the films Cocksucker Blues (1972) and Me and My Brother (1968).

Jack Kerouac (born in Lowell, Massachusetts, 1922; died in St. Petersburg, Florida, 1969) was an American novelist, writer, poet, and artist, best known for his novel, On the Road. He was one of the pioneers of the Beat Generation in the 1950s.
