Please note that a subscription to or purchase of Aperture magazine does NOT constitute a membership to Aperture.
Does a subscription or purchase of Aperture magazine qualify me for free entry into the Summer Open?
No. A subscription (print or digital) is distinct from a membership to Aperture. To become a Member, please visit aperture.org/join.
Can I submit individual images from different projects?
We would prefer for you to submit from one body of work or project. The curators of the Summer Open are looking for a cohesive body of work that speaks to this year’s theme. However, this body of work does not need to be completed; your images can be from an ongoing project.
Can I submit more than one portfolio?
No, you may only submit one portfolio.
Can I edit my portfolio once it has already been submitted?
If you'd like to edit your submission you'll need to email summeropen@aperture.org or support@picter.com
I create work as part of a team or collective. Can we enter work under our collective name?
Yes.
If I live outside the continental United States, am I still eligible for entry?
Yes, applicants living outside the U.S. are absolutely eligible to submit to the Summer Open. However, please note that you will be responsible for all costs associated with creating and shipping the work(s) to and from Aperture in New York.
I’m having trouble uploading my images and submitting my entry. Where can I get help?
Images must be at least 3000 pixels on the longest side and saved as a JPG file. Other file types such as TIFF, PNG, and PSD are not permissible. You can also try using a different web browser; Google Chrome tends to work best. If you continue to have issues uploading your images or completing your submission, visit Picter’s help center or e-mail the Picter support team at support@picter.com.
What happens to work that is selected?
If your work is selected, you will be notified by Aperture staff in May. It is up to you to produce and deliver the work (both to and from Aperture Gallery in New York) at your own expense before the exhibition opening date. If selected for the exhibition, additional information regarding the terms of loan of your work(s) will be provided.
I would much rather show prints instead of submitting digital images. Is that possible?
No. Digital review has now become standard practice for more and more juried competitions and reviews. If your scans are good quality, we will easily make the mental leap from the computer screen to the actual work. Regrettably, we are unable to consider entries that are not submitted digitally.
My work must be installed in a specific way, using special equipment. Can the gallery accommodate this?
Yes, to an extent. It is very important that, if your work requires installation beyond hanging a simple framed or unframed print, you mention this in the image description section. It is also up to you to provide any special equipment needed for viewing your work (i.e., a slide projector, analog television, etc.).
I can’t afford to ship framed artwork to Aperture; can I send an unframed exhibition print?
Yes, you can send an unframed exhibition print. However, please note that Aperture will not frame the work. It will be hung with either pins or magnets.
What if I run out of time?
No exceptions will be made for late submissions. Please allow for ample time to complete your entry.
I still need help. Who can I contact?
Send an e-mail to summeropen@aperture.org.
