2024 Women Photographers International Archive Congress

Wednesday, October 23 - Saturday, October 26

Pérez Art Museum Miami, 1103 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33132

Aperture will participate in the 2024 Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA) Congress: How Photography Teaches Us to Live Now. The 2024 WOPHA Congress is a creative convening and exhibition series held at the Pérez Art Museum Miami and virtually across parallel activations taking place in South Florida. The congress aims to establish a critical space for photography by bringing together worldwide organizations of women photographers, art historians, theorists, and curators with the goal to enrich and more accurately represent the dynamic history of women photographers from the nineteenth century to the present day.

Sarah Meister, executive director of Aperture, will deliver a keynote address, “Amateurs, Artists, and Archives: Evolving Perspectives on Women, Photography, and Education,” on October 24 at 3:20 p.m. She will discuss the current state of photography education, radical pedagogies, and feminist practices.

Other highlights include a panel with Susan Meiselas, the photographer, educator, and author of Collaboration: A Potential History of Photography. In addition, Mariko Takeuchi, the writer, curator, and head of art studies at the graduate school of Kyoto University of the Arts, Japan, will deliver a keynote lecture, “Dissident Women: The Genre-Bending Nature of Japanese Women Photographers and the Potential of Photographic Education,” delving into the international traveling exhibition and Aperture publication I’m So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now.

On October 25 at 5:30 p.m., Deborah Willis, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Photography and Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts and director of the Center for Black Visual Culture at New York University, will deliver closing remarks on visual history, teaching, and citizenship to celebrate the launch of the WOPHA Institute.

Registration for all events is available through the WOPHA website.

The 2024 WOPHA Congress is co-presented by Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA) and Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), and organized by the WOPHA team: AldeideDelgado, Founder, Director, Curator, Francisco Maso, Co-Founder and Creative Director, and Amanda Bradley, Associate Curator of Programming.
