Evidence features a combination of rare, vintage, gelatin-silver and never-before-exhibited archival prints, spanning the arc of Smith’s fifty-year career. The assembled pictures exemplify the artist’s keen, enduring eye and her use of the photographic medium to depict charged atmospheres and surreal states with a cast of evocative landscapes, silhouettes, street scenes, and revered cultural figures.
Smith will be signing Ming Smith: An Aperture Monograph (Aperture/Documentary Arts, 2020). This long-awaited monograph brings together four decades of Smith’s work, celebrating her trademark lyricism, distinctively blurred silhouettes, dynamic street scenes, and deep devotion to theater, music, poetry, and dance—from the “Pittsburgh Cycle” plays of August Wilson to the Afrofuturism of Sun Ra. Copies will be available for purchase at the gallery.
