Join Aperture and Baxter St at CCNY for the opening reception of the solo exhibition And Other Illusions and the book launch of My grandfather turned into a tiger … and other illusions (Aperture, 2024), both from Pao Houa Her, the winner of the third annual Next Step Award.
My grandfather turned into a tiger… and other illusions brings together four of the artist’s major series, including the body of work that reimagines her family’s history before leaving Laos, invoking a compelling and personal cosmology grounded in the traditions and contemporary metaphors of the Hmong diasporic community.
The exhibition will be on view from February 7 to March 21, 2024, at Baxter St’s Main Gallery. Both the publication and exhibition are the result of the Next Step Award, a partnership between Aperture and Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York, in partnership with the 7|G Foundation.

Pao Houa Her (born in Laos, 1982) is a Hmong American visual artist based in Blaine, Minnesota. Her is an assistant professor in photography and moving images at the University of Minnesota. She received an MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2012 and is the recipient of the 2023-24 Aperture–Baxter St Next Step Award.
