This special, signed, limited-edition print (Towards an Indian Gay Image, Lake Pichola, Udaipur, 1983) is accompanied by issue #243 of Aperture magazine, titled “Delhi: Looking Out/Looking In,” which focuses on the relationship between photography, urbanism, and activist trajectories in India’s capital city. Guest edited by Rahaab Allana, curator of the Delhi-based Alkazi Foundation for the Arts, this issue features a portfolio of work from Sunil Gupta, who has spent his career photographing queer subjects in India, inspiring a new generation to insist on an inclusive politics of belonging.

“This series marks the first time I returned to India from England as an adult. There, I found gay men living in plain sight but completely hidden from mainstream society. The last thing they wanted me to do was make photographs of them and publish them somewhere. It created a big dilemma for me, as I was still in college and hoping to document social justice using photojournalism—and my subjects were invisible.” —Sunil Gupta
