Description
“Saturated in color, Morales’s highly stylized, theatrical images feature muxe protagonists who confidently confront the camera . . . The religious allusions and sexual content in certain of his images have made Morales’s photographs the object of censorship in Mexico, where some conservative galleries and museums refuse to exhibit his work. But Morales is defiant.” —Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes

About the Artist

Nelson Morales (b. 1983, Unión Hidalgo, Oaxaca) grew up in Unión Hidalgo, a small town in Mexico’s Oaxaca region, where queer men and boys traditionally wear feminine clothing and makeup. Though Morales, who identifies as gay, initially rejected this custom, as a young adult, he returned home to photograph these muxes and eventually began to put himself in front of the camera, too. Morales’s work has been exhibited in the United States, Mexico, Malaysia, Spain, and The Netherlands and is in the collections of Televisa Foundation, Nail Hollis, and Foam.
