Description
Aperture is pleased to release this limited-edition photograph by Tebogo "Harness" Hamese, which coincides with the publication of Dandy Lion: The Black Dandy and Street Style by Shantrelle P. Lewis.

Harness Hamese's images convey a sense of resolve and cool. They communicate both the African past of the vintage clothes and the present of the wearers, breaking down stereotypes of what Africa was and is. Khumbula is a collective of young vintage-clothing enthusiasts in Johannesburg who, like many of their South African contemporaries, are using style and photography to engage in vital dialogue about African modernity and youth culture. Across social media platforms and through their blog, the collective uses vintage fashion to tell an African story from an African perspective. The group consists primarily of Tebogo “Harness” Hamese, a self-taught photographer; Andile Biyana, a soon-to-be attorney; the stylish quaintrelle, Phirima Motaung; and the dapper resident scribe, Bafana Mthembu (an accountant by trade).
