Aperture Loves New York: Gillian Laub and Jil Weinstock
Please join us at Aperture for a special conversation between photographer and filmmaker Gillian Laub and artist and curator Jil Weinstock to celebrate the opening of our new home and inaugural presentation, Aperture Loves New York. The two will discuss Laub’s history in New York City and her acclaimed career, including an iconic photograph from her book Family Matters (Aperture, 2021), featured in the installation.
Aperture has a rich and vibrant history of publishing photographs made in New York and by New Yorkers. This dynamic selection of work by iconic Aperture artists is curated by executive director Sarah Meister, and features more than twenty important and memorable photographs from the 1950s to today. Alongside the rare and striking prints are the Aperture books in which these images were published. Aperture Loves New York offers visitors an opportunity to engage with highlights from the history of modern and contemporary photography both as original photographic prints and in the accessible, democratic form of beloved Aperture titles.

Gillian Laub (born in Chappaqua, New York, 1975) is a photographer and filmmaker based in New York. She received a BA in comparative literature from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, before studying photography at the International Center of Photography, New York. Her projects include the Aperture books Testimony (2007) and Family Matters (2021) and the book and HBO film Southern Rites (2015). Laub received a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in 2019.
Jil Weinstock is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and arts leader. She currently serves as Executive Director of BAXTER ST at the Camera Club of New York and is also a practicing artist. Her work has been exhibited internationally and featured in publications, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, Art in America, ARTnews, Hyperallergic, and New York Magazine. Weinstock has completed artist residencies at the American Academy in Rome and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.
