Aperture Loves New York: Coreen Simpson and Rujeko Hockley
Please join us at Aperture for a special conversation between artist Coreen Simpson and writer and curator Rujeko Hockley to celebrate the opening of our new home and inaugural installation, Aperture Loves New York. The two will discuss Simpson’s influential practice and storied history of photographing in New York.
Aperture has a rich and vibrant history of publishing photographs made in New York and by New Yorkers. This dynamic selection of work by iconic Aperture artists is curated by executive director Sarah Meister, and features more than twenty important and memorable photographs from the 1950s to today. Alongside the rare and striking prints are the Aperture books in which these images were published. Aperture Loves New York offers visitors an opportunity to engage with highlights from the history of modern and contemporary photography both as original photographic prints and in the accessible, democratic form of beloved Aperture titles.

Coreen Simpson (born in New York, 1942) is a celebrated photographer and jewelry designer from Brooklyn, whose career has spanned more than five decades. Her work has been featured in Essence, The New York Times, The Village Voice, and Vogue, among other publications. Her photographs are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Bronx Museum; Le Musée de la Photographie, Belgium; and Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library, among others. Her work is featured in Coreen Simpson: A Monograph (Aperture, 2025).
Rujeko Hockley is a curator, writer, and cultural strategist. She is currently organizing an exhibition on Camille Billops at the Center for Art, Research and Alliances, New York, opening spring 2027, and completing an Executive MBA at IMD Business School in Lausanne, Switzerland. Previously, she was the Arnhold Associate Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art where she cocurated the 2019 Whitney Biennial, among others. Prior to that, as Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum, she cocurated Crossing Brooklyn: Art from Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, and Beyond (2014) and We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965–85 (2017).
