Alice Proujansky and Kelli Connell in Conversation

Join Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York for a conversation between Aperture teaching artist and 2024 Baxter St Mid-Career Initiative Artist Alice Proujansky and photographer and educator Kelli Connell on the occasion of Proujansky’s exhibition Hard Times are Fighting Times.

The conversation will revolve around both artists’ photographic practices and relationships to the medium. Hard Times are Fighting Times offers a profound and intimate reflection on family legacy, radical activism, and psychological formation. Drawing from her family’s personal archives, Proujansky traces the indelible influence of her parents’ revolutionary ideals and shared vision for social transformation. Hard Times are Fighting Times is on view through February 26.

Alice Proujansky is a photographer and quilter looking at family labor: birth, work, motherhood, and identity. Her latest book, Hard Times are Fighting Times (2023), uses archival and documentary photography to examine the legacy of radical activism in her family. Her photographs of culturally responsive birth work have been published extensively. She was the lead writer for Aperture On Sight, a photography and visual-literacy curriculum, and her first book, Go Photo! An Activity Book for Kids, was published by Aperture in 2016. 

Kelli Connell is an artist whose work investigates sexuality, gender, identity, and photographer-sitter relationships. Her groundbreaking monograph Pictures for Charis was published by Aperture in 2024. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Museum of Fine Arts Houston, among others. Connell is an editor at Skylark Editions and a professor at Columbia College Chicago.
