Saturday, September 9

2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. EDT

Sean Kelly Gallery, 475 10th Ave, New York, NY 10018

Aperture and Sean Kelly are delighted to present a book signing of Mystic Parallax (Aperture, 2023), the first major monograph by artist Awol Erizku. This event is held in conjunction with Erizku’s solo exhibition Delirium of Agony on view at Sean Kelly, New York from September 8 – October 21, 2023.

Working across photography, film, video, painting, and installation, his work references and reimagines African American and African visual culture, from hip-hop vernacular to Nefertiti, while nodding to traditions of spirituality and Surrealism. The comprehensive monograph spans Erizku’s career, displaying his studio practice with his work as an in-demand editorial photographer and cultural commentator. The publication features essays by critically acclaimed author Ishmael Reed, curator Ashley James, and writer Doreen St. Félix alongside interviews with the artist Urs Fischer and Antwaun Sargent.

Attendees are encouraged to RSVP and purchase a reserved copy of Mystic Parallax on the Sean Kelly website in advance. Reserved copies for the artist to sign will be distributed to attendees at the start of the event. Additional copies of the publication will also be available for purchase in the gallery first come, first served.

This event is presented in partnership with Sean Kelly.
