Dawoud Bey with Siddhartha Mitter: Elegy

Join Aperture and the New York Public Library for a conversation between the artist and photographer Dawoud Bey and New York Times writer Siddhartha Mitter, on Bey’s most recent publication Dawoud Bey: Elegy (Aperture, 2023). Elegy coincides with an exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, on view November 18, 2023, through February 25, 2024. This program is free and will be both in person and livestreamed. The conversation will be followed by a book signing with the artist.
To join the event in person, please register for an in-person ticket. Doors will open thirty minutes before the program begins. LIVE from NYPL events are generally overbooked to ensure a full house, so please arrive early, and we will do our best to accommodate everyone. Dawoud Bey (born in New York, 1953) is an American photographer whose work is featured in major collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Studio Museum in Harlem, and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Bey’s honors include fellowships from MacArthur, United States Artists, Guggenheim, and National Endowment for the Arts. He is a professor of art and a former distinguished college artist at Columbia College Chicago. Among his monographs and writings on photography are the Aperture titles Class Pictures (2007) and Dawoud Bey on Photographing People and Communities: The Photography Workshop Series (2019).
Siddhartha Mitter is a freelance writer and critic. He is interested in contemporary art and civic practices locally, nationally and internationally, including in the American South and on the African continent. His work appears most frequently in the New York Times and he has contributed to many other publications within and beyond the art field.
