On Sight

Lesson 2

Form: This Equals That

The second lesson features the book This Equals That (Aperture, 2014), by Jason Fulford and Tamara Shopsin, an excellent teaching tool for introducing photographic form and visual vocabulary, as well as offering the first lesson in how simple juxtapositions can create associative meanings. Students take a second scavenger hunt in search of visual form and begin to understand the camera as a tool for seeing.

Visual Dominoes

Aperture’s teaching artists use Visual Thinking Strategies as a resource for engaging students in the classroom. In every lesson, students are encouraged to talk about photographs through an open inquiry process, which in turn encourages open dialogue among students while the teacher guides the discussion. In this video Alice Proujansky, Aperture’s Educational Partnerships Coordinator, speaks about how to implement visual thinking strategies in the classroom.
