Announcing Tina Barney: Fashion

New York, October 6, 2026—Today, Aperture releases Tina Barney: Fashion, the first book dedicated to Tina Barney’s life and work in fashion photography.

Celebrated for her large-format tableaux of affluent families in the United States and Europe, Tina Barney is a keen observer of style and its coded web of meanings. Part memoir, part career survey, Tina Barney: Fashion traces the role of sartorial expression across Barney’s long career, including the editorial work made on assignment for leading magazines, such as W, The Face, and Arena Homme Plus. The book also considers Barney’s family history and photographic albums, focusing on her mother, a glamorous, in-demand model in the 1940s, who graced the cover of Harper’s Bazaar and was photographed by Horst P. Horst and George Hoyningen-Huene. Lively texts by Barney bring readers behind the scenes of pictures made in stately living rooms, on set for Gucci and Bottega Veneta, or for the pages of Vogue, showing how a life surrounded by glamour and artifice shaped one of our era’s greatest portraitists.

Concurrently with the release of the monograph, Olney Gleason gallery presents Tina Barney: Fashion, a related solo exhibition of work, on view from October 24 through November 14, 2026, at 297 Tenth Avenue, New York. Both the exhibition and book bring together nearly four decades of Barney’s major editorial commissions and campaigns for global fashion brands, between the late 1980s and the present—works that continue to expand the range of the artist’s photography practice. A conversation between Barney and book contributor Vince Aletti will be held at the gallery on Saturday, October 24, with details available soon.

Tina Barney: Fashion was made possible, in part, with generous support from Thomas R. Schiff and Mary Ellen Goeke. The book is published by Aperture and available at aperture.org.
