Between Reality and Dreams: Avion Pearce and Elle Pérez in Conversation

Aperture is thrilled to present a special conversation between the 2024 Aperture Portfolio Prize winner, Avion Pearce, and artist Elle Pérez. The two will discuss Pearce’s award-winning series In the Hours Between Dawn that depicts queer and trans communities of color in Brooklyn. Pérez, who is a mentor of Pearce’s, will also share their unique insight into the work. In the Hours Between Dawn inhabits multiple registers and explores photography’s potential to chart the interplay between time and the body. Survival, in Pearce’s work, is about being both soft and strong.
The exhibition Avion Pearce: 2024 Aperture Portfolio Prize Winner is on view from June 26 to July 26, 2024, at Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York. The Aperture Portfolio Prize aims to identify trends in contemporary photography and highlight artists whose work deserves greater recognition.

Avion Pearce studied photography at Parsons the New School for Design and has an MFA from the Yale School of Art. They received a BFA Photography Scholarship from Parsons, and they are a NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship recipient. Their work has been shown at Ryan Lee Gallery, Aperture, and Hudson Opera House, and has been commissioned by New York magazine, W, Crack, Netflix, and the New York Times.
Elle Pérez is a New York City–based artist from the Bronx. Pérez primarily works in photography and the moving image, depicting intimate moments, emotional exchanges, and visceral details within their portraits, landscapes, and films. Their work has been exhibited across the United States and internationally. Pérez is an assistant professor of photography at the Yale School of Art. Pérez is represented by 47 Canal, New York, and Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles.
