Aperture Connect Member Meet-Up

Wednesday, September 13

8:00 p.m. EST

Aperture Connect Members are invited to the third Connect Meet-Up of 2017. Members will receive a tour of Body, Self, Society: Chinese Performance Photography of the 1990s at the Walther Collection Project Space, followed by a private visit with W. M. Hunt, photography collector, curator, and consultant. This will be the first visit to Hunt’s new Chelsea studio and work space, where he will discuss a range of works from his collection and his life in photography.

W. M. HUNT is a champion of photography and a presenter both in the U.S. and internationally, from Shanghai to São Paulo. He is a longtime adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts, New York, and organizer of the W. Eugene Smith Talks at Aperture. His book The Unseen Eye: Photographs from the Unconscious (Aperture, 2011) was the basis for a large show that debuted at the Rencontres d’Arles, France, then toured to the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland; FOAM, Amsterdam; and the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at a special Member rate.

THE WALTHER COLLECTION is dedicated to researching, collecting, exhibiting, and publishing photography and video art. Body, Self, Society: Chinese Performance Photography of the 1990s features images by Ai Weiwei, Cang Xin, Huang Yan, Ma Liuming, Song Dong, Zhang Huan, and Zhuang Hui. Exhibited works explore the richness and variety of Chinese performance photography during this time, exploring three key themes: new visions of the performing body; the changing sense of self in modern China; and a continued confrontation with specific aspects of the country’s society, history, and culture.

Aperture Connect is a dynamic group of supporters (ages 21 to 37), residing in the New York Tri-State area, who seek to further their knowledge and understanding of photography, publishing, and the international photo community.
