Aperture Pop-Up at Rockefeller Center

Saturday, March 27 - Friday, April 30

To mark the publication of Aperture magazine’s “New York”—a special issue honoring the city through photographs and essays by visionary artists and writers, Aperture and Rockefeller Center are collaborating to create a month-long photography program celebrating New York, in the heart of the city, that includes outdoor public art exhibitions, a virtual talk series, and a special Aperture pop-up space.

The Aperture pop-up at Rockefeller Center will feature new limited-edition prints by artists featured in the magazine’s “New York” issue, new books and best sellers, special artist-signed publications, and more.

The Aperture pop-up runs concurrently alongside an outdoor exhibition of New York City street and subway photographs by Jamel Shabazz, whose work is featured in the “New York” issue and The Flag Project 2021—a public art installation celebrating the medium of photography, selected by Aperture Foundation’s executive director, Chris Boot, from an open call to submit photographs inspired by New York City.

“After a year of relying on online activities for connection with our audiences and community, we are deeply appreciative of the opportunity Rockefeller Center has given us, to be live and present in the cultural fabric of New York City once again,” says Chris Boot. “While our work plays a national and global role, New York is the source of our energy and our lifeblood. We are very excited to be back on the streets, and to be contributing to the resurgence of culture in New York this spring.”

One year after COVID-19 struck New York City, this collaboration celebrates photography’s role in conveying the character and identity of the city, and in shaping our imaginations for its future.
