Issue Details
In this issue, Guest Editor Darius Himes brings into focus the production process that underpins bookmaking, aka “The Fine Art of Making Things.” As he writes, “The central task of producing a book is to manifest in physical form an abstract vision in one’s mind. The production process is one of coming up against the realities of manufacturing.” A sampling of contributions from production managers, printers, publishers, and designers (such as David Strettel of Dashwood Books, Michael Mack, and Christina Labey of Conveyor Arts) and printing experts and technical artisans Sue Medlicott, Thomas Palmer, Danny Frank, and others walk us through the various stages of planning and printing a book; and Alan Rapp interviews award-winning designer and publisher Hans Gremmen. This issue features contributions by Rebecca Solnit, Erik Kessels, Vicki Goldberg, and Susan Bright, among others. Issue 005 also presents the second year of books shortlisted for the Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards.
