Aperture Conversations

Inside the “Latinx” issue with Pilar Tompkins Rivas and Elizabeth Ferrer

Tuesday, January 18

7:00 p.m. EDT

In a series of online public programs that accompany the winter issue of Aperture magazine, “Latinx,” photographers, historians, and writers reflect on imagery that celebrates the dynamic visions of Latinx people across the United States.

Join us for the first discussion in this series as we take a look inside the issue with guest editor Pilar Tompkins Rivas and writer Elizabeth Ferrer. Guest edited by Tompkins Rivas, chief curator at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, “Latinx” spans a century of image making, connecting historical and contemporary photography, and covers the themes of political resistance, family and community, fashion and culture, and the complexity of identity in American life. Tompkins Rivas and Ferrer will delve into the various topics, artists, and takeaways in the issue and discuss their own relationships to its contents.
