Aperture Remix Exhibition Opening at Aperture Gallery
Weโre excited to announce Aperture Remix, a new exhibition at Aperture Gallery, featuring work by Rinko Kawauchi, Vik Muniz, Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs, Martin Parr, Doug Rickard, Viviane Sassen, Alec Soth, Penelope Umbrico, and James Welling. Join us Wednesday, October 17, for an opening reception with some of the participating artists, and catch a preview of works from Aperture Foundationโs Sixtieth Anniversary Photography Auction, which will also be on view.
For Aperture Remix, a select group of contemporary photographers were asked to respond to an Aperture publication that has been influential in forming their work, paying it artistic homage. Each commissioned artist has created a new work for the exhibition, inspired by the ideas that they have found most influential or of greatest concern in the earlier work.
The range of participating artists, and the diversity of their approaches, reflect the multifaceted and elastic nature of contemporary photography. The works that each artist has created for Aperture Remixโincorporating new images made in response or interventions with the original publication itselfโcomprise a way of mapping the enduring influence of Apertureโs publication history as it relates to contemporary practice.
The exhibition will feature work by the following artists:
Rinko Kawauchi in response to Sally Mannโs Immediate Family (1992)
Vik Muniz in response to Edward Westonโs The Daybooks: Vol. 1, Mexico (1973)
Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs in response to a selection of Apertureโs essay titles
Martin Parr in response to Issue 103 of Aperture magazine (1986)
Doug Rickard in response to Stephen Shoreโs Uncommon Places (1982/2004)
Viviane Sassen in response to Edward Westonโs Nudes (1977)
Alec Soth in response to Robert Adamsโ Summer Nights (1985)
Penelope Umbrico in response to The Masters of Photography (1977โ1999)
James Welling in response to Paul Strandโs Time in New England (1980)
