Issue Details
Issue 013 offers a riff on many of the themes that infuse the best issues of The PhotoBook Review: an interview with publisher, artist, educator, and curator Delphine Bedel on publishing as the transmission of knowledge; a survey of designers by Alan Rapp on how active type should (or should not) be in relation to photographs; a conversation with Dayanita Singh on books as sculptures and the tactile, sensual possibilities of the book; and Aaron Schuman in conversation with Alec Soth on what it means to revisit a classic “first book.” A roundup of “PhotoBooks of the 1990s” features contributions by Laia Abril, Hannah Whitaker, Matthew Leifheit, Clare Strand, Gregory Halpern, and Hank Willis Thomas; and a list of favorite photobooks by Robert Adams, Rinko Kawauchi, Bertien van Manen, and others, assembled by Christopher McCall, further explores the idea of “PhotoBook as Lineage.” The Reviews section features Sarah Bay Gachot on Anouk Kruithof, Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa on Mark Steinmetz, and Rick Moody on Teju Cole. Issue 013 also serves as the catalogue of shortlisted books for the 2017 Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards.
