Photography & Fashion’s Maverick Magazines (Video)

A panel discussion with Inez & Vinoodh exploring the role of the magazine as a platform for innovation in fashion photography.

The magazine form is central to the story of fashion photography. In conjunction with the release of Aperture magazine’s “Fashion” issue, guest-edited by Inez & Vinoodh, this panel explored the role of the magazine as a platform for innovation in fashion photography and for fostering the careers of many of the industry’s most important image-makers.

The conversation touched upon independent magazines of the 1990s, such as i-D and The Face, and explored how publications today expand a tradition forged by these groundbreakers. Speakers included Inez & Vinoodh, who came up working for the Face in the 1990s and have since photographed for most major fashion publications; Penny Martin, editor of The Gentlewoman; Phil Bicker, creative director, designer, and formerly art director at The Face where he championed and first published the work of David Sims, Corinne Day, and Juergen Teller, among others; and Charlotte Cotton, visiting faculty in photography at Parsons The New School for Design and author of The Photograph as Contemporary Art (2004).
