On October 24th—the day following our 60th Anniversary Gala Dinner and Auction—The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center will host a lecture by photographer Mary Ellen Mark, who is considered one of the most respected and influential photographers of our time. She has achieved worldwide visibility from her exhibitions, books, and editorial magazine work.

Mark will discuss a range of works from her long and extensive career. For over four decades, she has traveled extensively to make pictures that reflect a high degree of humanism, including her images of our world’s diverse cultures—from Indian circuses and brothels in Bombay to runaway children in Seattle.

Mark has published seventeen books—including Twins: Photographs and Interviews by Mary Ellen Mark (Aperture, 2005)—and has won countless awards, including the Cornell Capa Award by the International Center of Photography, the Infinity Award for Journalism, the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts.

This event is part of the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center’s visiting contemporary artist lecture series and partially sponsored by the Tyler School of Art. Lectures are open to the public and serve the educational purpose of cultivating an active dialogue surrounding photography.
